Packaging Technologist

What are you going to do?

As Packaging Engineer at Prinsen Berning, you design and implement packaging solutions that support sustainability goals, operational efficiency, and product integrity. You ensure packaging aligns with ESG commitments, compliance requirements, and PPWR regulations. In this position, you combine deep knowledge of packaging materials with technical integration on production lines, while collaborating with internal teams on specification governance and documentation.

Your core tasks

• Design packaging concepts for new and existing products ensuring recyclability, machinability, and compliance with food contact regulations.

• Combine deep knowledge of packaging materials (paper, plastics, laminates, bio-based options) with operational requirements.

• Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate packaging designs with new lines and equipment

• Evaluate feasibility and performance of packaging on high-speed lines and automated systems.

• Work closely with RA & Specification Manager to align packaging specifications with the single source of truth approach.

• Ensure packaging component data is accurate, complete, and maintained in the specification system.

• Ensure all packaging designs meet EU PPWR requirements for recyclability, material reduction, and reuse targets.

• Monitor regulatory updates and implement changes to maintain compliance.

• Prepare documentation and reporting for PPWR audits and sustainability metrics.

• Conduct cost-in-use analysis and CO₂ impact assessments for packaging solutions.

• Drive continuous improvement in packaging processes and materials to meet ESG and PPWR goals.

• Collaborate with suppliers to define material specifications and validate performance.

• Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with governance processes.

• Support packaging trials during production scale-up and ensure successful validation.

• Partner with PD, QA, Procurement, and RA teams to ensure packaging meets product and regulatory requirements.

• Participation in supplier audits, and preparation of logistical data such as feasibility assessments, packaging structures, and palletization layouts.

What we ask

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Packaging,, Industrial Design Engineering  or related field.

• Identification of root causes of packaging complaints or defects, as well as revision and improvement of existing packaging and related processes

• 3–5 years experience in packaging development within food or FMCG.

• Expertise in packaging materials and familiarity with emerging technologies (paper-based solutions, flexible formats).

• Knowledge of PPWR requirements and sustainability regulations.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills in Dutch, German and English.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to manage multiple projects and work cross-functionally.
